With the advent of FTL travel, colonization ships, miles in length, tore through the fragile fabric of space, scattering humanity among the stars, away from the dying Terra, to any exoplanet barely capable of supporting life. Hundreds of factions sprung up, spreading throughout the observable universe. The final frontier, one without borders. One of these factions was the Arceans, whose interstellar commonwealth had began at a single planet, a single colony, now a sprawling metropolis of a planet. Domum. Arceans embraced genetic engineering as the answer to all worldly problems. Cloning became very popular, perfecting your phenotype and raising the resulting clone as a child of your own. Immortality.
Over hundreds of years, technological breakthroughs were made. Then, cloning reached a tipping point. The ability to 'snapshot' one's brain, and the state of all of the synapses, and transfer them to an electronic storage device, then rewrite a similar brain according to the data. This allowed for immortality through the mind. The idea repelled many, though - the thought of having wiring running through your brain and the ability to reconfigure it was frightening. But slowly, society accepted the benefits over the disadvantages. The ability to transfer data instantaneously through subspace (FTL) made it possible to have an 'empty' clone ready to be activated upon your death, obtaining the most recent 'version' of your Animus. Augmenting oneself with neural implants to allow for transfer of memories between people became commonplace. Thus, commands could be given out non-verbally. 'Drones', or empty clones with a neural connection to the active clone, and partially independent thinkers, became used for large scale operations, largely on the battlefield, where a commanding clone could control a squad of drones.
